In his school reports of group 5 and 6 there are notes from his teacher saying: “It’s nice to see Roy drawing so well, but something other than Donald Duck would be nice for a change!”.

Now, many more years later he can safely say that he’s built up his own style in drawing. His kids are a huge source of inspiration, as you can tell from his portfolio. With humor and a hint of sarcasm, Roy puts a smile on everyone’s face.

As of 2007, Roy works as a freelance illustrator. He’s mainly focussed on illustrations for articles, children’s books, birth announcements and websites.

Thé was born in Purworedjo, Java to a large Chinese Indonesian family. As a child he was interested in the Tarzan comic strips of Edgar Rice Burroughs. He attended the Seni Rupa (arts) institute in Bandung. After that, in 1965, he came to the Netherlands and started as a draftsman at the Toonder Studio’s, initially as a volunteer and later as an employee.

In 1970 he was asked to provide illustration for Miep Diekmann’s children’s book. He became a freelance illustrator providing illustration to many children’s book authors such as van Guus Kuijer, Els Pelgrom, Sylvia Vanden Heede, Dolf Verroen and Annie M.G. Schmidt.

Thé won the ‘Gouden Penseel’ (Golden Brush) award three times and in 2005 he won the Woutertje Pieterse Prijs for his book Waar is de taart? (Where is the cake?), a picturebook without text. For this he also won the Zilveren Penseel (Silver pencil).

Jelle prefers working in Flash, Photoshop and Illustrator and tries to use and combine these as much as possible. The most important advantage while working digital is that you don’t have to plan, sketch and think everything through before you start. Any mistake can easily disappear with a simple ctrl + z. You don’t need to throw away the whole drawing. As a result, there is less frustration and much more freedom.
