In a few weeks (October 2010) a new phone will be launched. This cell phone will impresses you with it’s extreme simplicity and good looks. It’s called John’s Phone.

John’s phone doesn’t have a screen, digital address book or any other features we got used to on modern cell phone. The only feature it has is voice communication. That’s it. With John’s Phone you are always available. No frills and useless information such as cameras, SMS messaging, Internet and endless ringtones. John’s Phone keeps things simple.

John’s Phone will be obvious. The phone can call and hang up. It could not be more simple. Each key number can be used as a stored preset number. Therefore, John’s Phone is also perfect as a mobile phone for kids who can store their parent’s number in there for a quick dial.

John’s Phone is a phone with large keys. In the back side of the device is a flap with an address book and pen which makes it a very suitable mobile phone for the elderly who are still used at writing phone numbers down.

John’s Phone was designed by John Doe in Amsterdam and it is this that makes this mobile phone a unique piece of Dutch design.

John’s Phone is available in five colors:

White ( John Snow’s Phone )
Brown ( John’s Phone Tree )
Pink ( John Sweet’s Phone )
Black ( John’s Phone Business )
Green ( John Grass’s Phone )

John’s phone doesn’t have a screen, digital address book or any other features we got used to on modern cell phone, like those which you would expect to find at sites like O2.co.uk. The only feature it has is voice communication. That’s it. With John’s Phone you are always available.

You can buy the phone from their website’s store (worldwide shipment).

Laurens van Wieringen, born 1974 in Nijmegen the Netherlands, studied at the Arnhem Institute for the Arts. After this he continued his study in Product Design at the Royal College of Art in London for his master degree. He now has started his own design studio in Amsterdam.

His attitude towards design encourages startling and refreshing ideas. He is a defiant explorer of shapes and materials by using, inventing or twisting production methods.

One of his products that really stands out is the Furniture Ball. This Furniture Ball consists of five seat sections each with their own character, a lounge chair, a sort of cradle and rocking elements. Together they form a white sphere.

The furniture Ball was presented with edible scale models of the Furniture Ball. Different tastes like; pear, apple, drambuie, cinnamon and various sorts of chocolate make them a welcome present.

Willem van der Sluis is a Dutch product designer. His designs are widely ranged around repetition and rhythm. This results in modular clusters and efficient systems that are easy to use, easy to transport and also very easy to transform. He would often ask him self questions like, ‘Does the world really need another lamp? And if so, how can these designs add value, something different, new features or functionality to exciting designs?’

Willem van der Sluis.

Willem’s design firm called Customr, is based in Amsterdam and has an excellent repertoire of work. Some of Willem’s most inspiring works are the Aircon luminaire that was produced by Luceplan and the SportDome, a project that Willem and his team created for the Dutch Department of Justice.

Willem van der Sluis by Dutch Profiles

The SportDomes project is a very interesting project. At first, Willem wasn’t that interested in designing anything for a jail. To design a structure that could give people, that are being held against their will, some form of pleasure in their confined day seems like a project for the cold hearted, but Willem created a structure that not only allows the inmates to play a little sports, but shields them from being scrutinized by outsiders.

SportDome by Willem van der Sluis.

SportDome by Willem van der Sluis.

SportDome by Willem van der Sluis.

SportDome by Willem van der Sluis.

The magical aspect of this dome is that at night, when it is illuminated, it looks like a diamond, a piece of beauty inside the terrible concept of criminality and imprisonment.

A new Dutch 5 euro coin, designed by Stani Michiels, pays tribute to the history of Dutch architecture. Both the historical architecture as well as the innovative conceptual architecture and modern design are popular across the globe.

The obverse side of the coin displays the history of Dutch architecture. The names of great and important Dutch architects form the portrait of Queen Beatrix. Stani ordered the names of the architects by popularity. He chose to order the architects not alphabetically or chronologically but in a new way: by using the internet as a seismograph and ordering the architects by the number of hits on search engines.

The Architecture Fiver.

The reverse side of the five-euro coin draws attention to the striking fact that many Dutch architects have also included publishing books on architecture in their professional activities. To illustrate this, recent books on architecture rise up from the sides of the coin like buildings. Through their careful placement they combine to outline the Netherlands.

One of the issues was how many books to take: many thin books or fewer thick books. With one very thick book you would only get a circle. To get the best approximation of the Netherlands you would need books of only one page, which is not optimal either.

Design process by Stani Michiels

The birds on the coin also have a meaning. Each bird flies above the capital of each Dutch province. In the final coin these random birds are replaced with a bird which is typical for that province.

The Architecture Fiver – back.

In the end, it’s a true work of graphic art, a beauty to behold and ofcourse I bought one for myself too.
